2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV debuts at New York auto show
The Outlander PHEV gets two electric motors and a 2.0-liter gas engine.

ELECTRICS AND SUVS ARE THE FUTURE, SAYS MITSU

Mitsubishi, despite the demise of the Lancer Evo, will not go gently into that good night. The tri-diamond brand revealed the compact Mirage G4 at the New York auto show, as well as the new Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. It was our first live look at the SUV on this side of the pond.
The Outlander PHEV gets a full-time, twin-electric motor, four-wheel-drive system that distributes torque. Two motors are installed on the front and rear axles, working with the Mitsu’s Super All-Wheel Control system to deliver more stable handling. A 12-kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides the power.
A 2.0-liter gas engine backs up those motors with three drive modes that are selected automatically. EV is full electric, obviously; series hybrid uses electric power and the engine as generator; and parallel hybrid uses both the engine and motor for forward motivation. Regenerative brakes capture energy when the car is slowing down.

The Outlander switches to whatever drive mode is the most efficient.
The Outlander PHEV comes with all the advanced safety features that we expect on this type of car, including an around-view monitor, forward-collision mitigation, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. It also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
We don’t have figures yet, but Mitsubishi Motors North America executive VP Don Swearingen says it will offer a high electric range and combined miles per gallon. “Mitsubishi's future is crossover utility vehicles and electrified vehicles,” said Swearingen. “Today we are showing the first piece of that plan.”
The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV goes on sale this fall.
