Chevrolet is getting ready to unveil the next-generation Camaro ZL1 at the New York auto show, and we got a sneak peek plus an insane ride in a development mule to help whet our appetites.
The newest addition to the growing sixth-generation Camaro portfolio will not only outperform the rest of the roster on the track, it also sports a top-notch interior and an extreme body kit.
Riding shotgun with one of GM’s in-house hotshoes, we were strapped into a five-point harness before heading out on Spring Mountain Raceway’s west track. Sitting at the staging area waiting for the g-forces to push and pull us through the corners, we were taken aback by the fantastic supercharger whine bleeding into the cabin and the burbling exhaust at idle. That burble turned into a scream as we launched onto the track and RPMs climbed. Even though the driver couldn't wind the LT4 completely out given the short course, the advertised 640 hp wasn't wasted in a plume of tire smoke when exiting turns -- the ZL1 thing sticks and hauls. Since these days anyone with a decent budget, a big turbocharger, and a set of slicks can build a solid straight-line performer, the real highlight of the ZL1 is how capable it is when thrown around corners.

The top-of-the-line Magnetic Ride suspension is responsible for the cornering, and also keeps the Camaro from diving during the heavy braking required with this much power. Knowing this ZL1 needs all the help possible, Chevy specs six-piston front calipers and massive 15.35-inch front rotors, plus sticky Eagle F1 tires as standard equipment.
Brutal acceleration comes from the rear wheels, after being fed the LT4’s 640 hp by either a six-speed stick or Chevy’s first 10-speed automatic. The upcoming 10-speed features extremely close ratios, which should help squeeze out the best fuel economy possible given the performance. If you’re hoping the new transmission will show up in your next Silverado, you’ll have to wait until 2018 -- until then, it will be a ZL1 exclusive. If you’re still concerned about the engine overpowering the tires all the time, the electronic limited-slip diff will help (a little).
